The silk mills moved to Putnam, Connecticut in the early 30's (and eventually moved overseas). This building then became the Gibson air conditioner plant. It's counterpart made refrigerators a few miles away in Greenville, MI. Gibson became White Consolidated and the factory was expanded several times. White Consolidated was bought out by Swedish firm AB Electrolux in the early 90's. They had no interest in operating a century old factory in the rust belt of the United States. The city purchased the building and leased it out for a time, but it has been completely vacant for at least 10 years. It has been allowed to deteriorate so badly that it would cost a fortune to make it usable again. The city council is trying to decide what to do with it. Demolition is the most likely scenario, but the city can't bring themselves to let it go. So much of Belding's identity is connected to this old building. The town's very soul resides in that clock tower. Long time and former residents (like myself) can't imagine the town without it. When the tower dies the town dies with it.
